I was nine years old when I first watched Dirty Dancing. At that young age, a lot of the subject matter flew right over my head, but I remember being genuinely puzzled about one particular plot point: why is it such a big deal for Penny to get an abortion?

Now, keep in mind this was the late 80s and I knew little of the world beyond my small farming community. I don’t even think I had more than a basic grasp on the concept of sex (despite the repeated viewings of Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey doing the horizontal merengue). And yet somehow – AT THE AGE OF NINE – it was inconceivable to me that there had once been a time when a woman couldn’t legally and openly make the choice to have an abortion.

I am now 34, and I can’t understand why this is still a fucking issue in 2013.
